The Montana lumbar is inspired by the traditional geometric designs of the Oaxacan Zapotec tribes, modernized by Ryan in simplifying the shapes and using contrasting neutral colors. The paired down elements and colors made it that much more important to pay extra attention to the details in the design process. Making sure the angles, sizing and placement of each motif sat right with the eye, while balancing the colors, and getting the whole piece to work as one. The Montana is lovingly handmade from black and natural sheep's wool by our artisan Pastora and her collective of Zapotec women near Oaxaca City, Mexico. They wash, naturally dye, and spin all of the wool by hand. They then take our design spec, and flatweave the pillows by hand, one by one, on a pedal loom, talking several weeks per pillow. The pillow has a handwoven cotton back with a zipper and comes ready to use with a pillow insert.
